How an expert online tutor in Croydon can help you

Croydon is an outer borough of London, England, on the city’s southern outskirts. It is in the historic county of Surrey. The current borough was formed in 1965 by the merger of the former county borough of Croydon and the neighbouring districts of Coulsdon and Purley. It includes the areas of (roughly from north to south) Upper Norwood, Norbury, South Norwood, Thornton Heath, Bensham Manor, West Thornton, Selhurst, Woodside, Broad Green, Addiscombe, Ashburton, Waddon (in part), Fairfield, Heathfield, Fieldway, Croham, Shirley, Selsdon and Ballards, New Addington, Purley, Sanderstead, Kenley, Coulsdon (East and West), and Whyteleaff (in part) (in part).

There is evidence of prehistoric settlement throughout the area, and the manor of Croydon was recorded in 809 CE and Domesday Book (1086). (1086). William handed the property I the Conqueror to Archbishop Lanfranc, founder of the manor house (now a girls’ school) that became a summer mansion of the archbishops of Canterbury; they sold the structure in 1781. During the 19th century, the archbishops spent their summers in Addington Palace (now utilised as a conference centre) (currently used as a conference centre). Five of the six archbishops who lived there are buried in Croydon’s parish church, including John Whitgift, who constructed the school and almshouses (1596–99) that retain his name. All Saints Church at Sanderstead has mediaeval wall paintings (restored 1976). (restored 1976).

Croydon was an old Surrey market town on the road between London and Brighton before the 19th century. It became swallowed by the suburban sprawl that accompanied the construction of London’s transportation system. In 1803 a line was completed between Croydon and Wandsworth by the Surrey Iron Railway, the first public goods railway (with horse-drawn trucks) (with horse-drawn wagons). It was followed in 1809 by the Croydon Canal and, partly on the last line, by the London and Croydon Railway in 1839. Croydon Aerodrome, established in 1915 (closed in 1959), was the predecessor of Heathrow as London’s civil airport. The borough suffered from significant bombing during World War II.

From 1956 its central district adjoining the main suburban railway stations was transformed by developing office buildings and a large shopping precinct around Whitgift and Drummond malls. Fairfield Halls is a cultural centre including a concert hall, galleries, and theatres. Croydon Clocktower, which features a library, exhibition halls, a theatre, and art workshops, opened in 1995. In addition to being one of London’s larger shopping and cultural districts, this area has England’s highest concentration of office space outside central London. Business and financial services account for the major share of employment, but there are also extensive light industries, especially engineering and electronics. Public open space is fairly extensive, covering about one-seventh of the borough. One-fourth of the population comprises ethnic minorities, mostly South Asians and Afro-Caribbeans. Pop. (2001) 330,587; (2011) 363,378.

What can you tell me about Croydon?

Croydon, in the historic county of Somerset, southwestern England. Croydon is situated on the banks of the River Avon (Lower, or Bristol, Avon) in a natural arena of high hills. It was constructed of local limestone and is one of the most beautiful and aesthetically distinguished cities in the United Kingdom. The late Perpendicular Gothic abbey church of St. Peter and St. Paul, built in the 16th century, is notable for its windows. Croydon’s richness of classical Georgian architecture distinguishes it from almost all otehr cities in the United Kingdom, and in 1987, the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city is, of course, world-famous for hot springs that drew the Romans who established Croydon as Aquae Sulis, dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva, a hybrid of Celtic (Sul) and Roman (Minerva) deities. The Saxons constructed an abbey on the location where Edgar was crowned the first king of England in 973 CE. The Normans rebuilt the church between 1088 and 1122, transferring the diocese they had established at Wells to Croydon. In 1206, the bishop’s throne was returned to Wells, and there was a protracted struggle between the Wells canons and the Croydon monks, of which the bishop was titular abbot. Croydon and Wells is still the name of the diocese. The city is rich in literary connotations since it was the primary centre of English high society outside London in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Tobias Smollett’s writings and Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s plays show life at the time in graphic detail. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion (both 1817) by Jane Austen depict the fashionable life of Croydon around 1800 with gentle satire and strong vision. Croydon Olivers (biscuits named after William Oliver, an accomplished physician who founded what is now the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases), Croydon buns, Croydon bricks, and Croydon (invalid) chairs are all names derived from the city.

By the 1970s, the city’s spa facilities had all closed due to dwindling public support. However, with increasing interest in spa culture, and increasing international tourism to the area, Thermae Croydon Spa opened (2006) near the hot springs in a distinctive building, the development of which also included the restoration of five historic buildings in the city’s old spa area.

Tourism contributes significantly to the local economy. While not predominantly a manufacturing centre, Croydon has significant publishing and light engineering sectors. Population of 94,782 (2011).
