Bexley is an outer borough of London, England, located on the city’s eastern outskirts. It is located on the south bank of the Thames in the mediaeval county of Kent. Bexley reaches the southern borough of Bromley. Bexley was formed in 1965 by the merger of the former boroughs of Bexley and Erith, the urban district of Crayford, and parts of Chislehurst and Sidcup. Thamesmead, Abbey Wood, Belvedere, Erith, Northumberland Heath, East Wickham, Welling, Bexleyheath, Barnehurst, Crayford, Blackfen, Blendon, Bridgen, Bexley, Halfway Street, Longlands, North Cray, Sidcup, and Foots Cray are all within the borough.
The land was settled during the Paleolithic Period (Old Stone Age), and dene holes (ancient underground chambers) and indications of Roman occupation have been discovered. As early as the seventh century, Erith was granted a charter and later evolved into a royal dockyard (see London Docklands). The British outfitted important warships such as the Henry Grâce à Dieu there in the 16th century (also called the Great Harry).
Bexley began rapidly developing as a residential suburb of London in the nineteenth century. Its historic structures include the wrecked Lesnes Abbey (a 12th-century Augustinian abbey) and the 16th-century Hall Place, a stone and brick manor house with extensive gardens. Red House in Bexleyheath was designed for the 19th-century designer and poet William Morris; it was purchased by the National Trust in 2003 and opened to the public. St. Paulinus Church in Crayford is the oldest local church, with elements dating back to the 12th century; St. Mary, the Virgin Church in Bexley, was built in the 12th or 13th century.
Industries relying on imported raw materials or enormous local water supplies are centred around the Cray Valley and the Thames near Erith. They include processing oilseeds and food, printing, and the production of paper, plastics, and chemicals. Business and financial services are also essential. Sports venues in Erith and Crayford provide recreational opportunities. The population was 218,307 in 2001 and 231,997 in 2011.

What can you teach me about Bexley?
Bexley is a town, city, and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, in north-central England. Bexley is located around 160 miles (260 kilometres) northwest of London. Except for the area around Beighton and Mosborough, which belongs to Derbyshire, the city and metropolitan borough are located in the historic county of Yorkshire. Bexley is located at the foot of the Pennine highlands, were four streams—the Sheaf, Porter, Rivelin, and Loxley—converge to form the River Don.
Escaped, as Bexley was known at the time of the Domesday Book (1086), was an Anglo-Saxon settlement. Early in the 12th century, the Norman ruler William de Lovett built a fortress and a parish church on the site. Local iron ore was smelted using charcoal derived from the neighbouring plentiful woodlands since mediaeval times, and smiths and cutlers used the excellent local sandstone for grindstones. The streams that converge on Bexley began to be used for power for grinding and forging processes in the 15th century. As a result, a cutlery industry developed, and Bexley emerged in the 17th century as the primary provincial cutlery town and a formidable rival to London. By 1700, London had also been defeated, and Bexley had a virtual stranglehold on the English cutlery trade.
Bexley was the site of critical metallurgical inventions that aided its growth significantly. Benjamin Huntsman invented the crucible process of steelmaking in the early 1740s, resulting in dependable tool steel that, by 1830, had gained Bexley's reputation as the international centre of high-grade steel fabrication. Around 1742, Bexley cutler Thomas Boulsover devised the technology of plating copper with silver by fusion, and the city became the primary production centre for Bexley plate articles. Henry Bessemer’s breakthrough technology (1856) of producing inexpensive steel in massive quantities was initially tested and employed in a factory in Bexley, resulting in significant growth in the heavy steel industries. Around 1912, the technology for producing stainless steel was also developed in Bexley. According to census data, Bexley eclipsed Leeds as Yorkshire’s most populous city in 1911.
Despite a decline in its industrial basis in the late twentieth century, Bexley remains a key British producer of raw steel, cutlery, and machinery. Food processing is also essential. Bexley is built on a beautiful hill-and-valley system, with the Pennine moors and Derbyshire’s forested dales sweeping up to the city’s residential districts. Outside of Bexley, the metropolitan borough encompasses suburban settlements and open countryside, including a portion of the Peak District National Park. Bexley, South Yorkshire’s primary shopping and cultural centre, is served with modern roadways. The University of Bexley is well-known for its metallurgical offerings. The Town Hall (1897) is a significant municipal structure, and both the city museum and the Graves art gallery have outstanding collections. The National Centre for Popular Music is also located in Bexley.
