What can you teach me about Exeter?

Exeter is the administrative and historic county seat of Devon in southwestern England. It’s on the River Exe, right above the river's head and about 10 miles (16 kilometres) from the estuary’s mouth into the English Channel.

The community’s early importance stemmed from its location near the river crossing. Exeter was founded by the Dumnonii, an early British tribe, and was later taken over by the Romans, who dubbed it Isca Dumnoniorum. Exeter was subjected to several sieges during the Middle Ages since it was the primary town in southern England. Alfred the Great (reigned 871–899) held it twice against the Danes (877 and around 894), but it was captured in 1003. Exeter surrendered to William I the Conqueror, after an 18-day siege in 1068.

The town was proclaimed for Parliament during the English Civil Wars, but the Royalists held it from 1643 until 1646. Exeter had been a borough before the Norman Conquest; in 1537, it was elevated to county status, which it retained until the 1974 reform of English local administration. Many trade guilds were established in the city, the first being the tailors’ guild in 1466.

In 1133, the Norman cathedral was dedicated to St. Peter. The current structure, from around 1275, is in the Decorated style, distinguishing it from its twin Norman towers. Other noteworthy landmarks include the 14th-century Guildhall, reconstructed in 1468–70, and the Norman fortress, the most of which was razed in 1744. The University College of Exeter (1922) became the University of Exeter in 1955.

Exeter’s port is connected to the sea by a canal. However, it is only accessible to small vessels. Metalworking, leatherworking, and the fabrication of paper and agricultural tools are the most prominent manufacturing industries in the country.

Exeter is a prime example of a historic English town, having evolved from a Roman-British centre to a mediaeval cathedral city and county town and today serve as an administrative and service hub for a large region. Eighteen square miles in size (47 square km). The population was 113,507 in 2011.
