How private tutors help support students' studies with one-to-one online tutoring in Barking and Dagenham

Barking and Dagenham is an outlying borough of London, England, located on the city’s eastern outskirts. It is located on the north bank of the Thames in the mediaeval county of Essex. The borough was founded in 1965 by the merger of the boroughs of Dagenham and Barking, containing the settlements of Barking, Becontree, and Dagenham and sections of Marks Gate and Becontree Heath.

Barking Abbey (established in 666), the preeminent Benedictine nunnery in England before the collapse of monastic institutions in the 1530s, was the focal point of growth in the area from the 7th to the mid-16th centuries. During the erection of the Norman keep, William the Conqueror stayed at Barking Abbey (the White Tower of the Tower of London). The abbey ruins are adjacent to the parish church of St. Margaret (15th century), where adventurer James Cook married in 1762. The 15th-century Curfew Tower still guards the churchyard entrance. The late 16th century H-shaped and redbrick Eastbury Manor House is nicely preserved. The partly moated Valence House Museum (17th century) houses local items and the Fanshawe portrait collection. The 12th–13th-century church of St. Peter and St. Paul and the 15th-century Cross Keys Inn is noteworthy.

Barking was a critical fishing port until the railways arrived in the nineteenth century, when market gardening became the principal economic sector. This, in turn, came to an end with the London County Council’s construction of the massive Becontree Estate housing development in the 1920s and the large-scale attendant immigration of new industries. Dagenham is home to a significant automobile facility and a chemical plant. The original massive Barking Power Station (1925–81) remains a prominent landmark. Old Dagenham, Parsloes, and Mayesbrook parks are among the borough’s public open spaces. Fourteen square miles of land (36 square km). The population was 163,944 in 2001 and 185,911 in 2011.

What can you teach me about Barking and Dagenham?

Barking and Dagenham is a town, city, and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, in north-central England. Barking and Dagenham is located around 160 miles (260 kilometres) northwest of London. Except for the area around Beighton and Mosborough, which belongs to Derbyshire, the city and metropolitan borough are located in the historic county of Yorkshire. Barking and Dagenham is located at the foot of the Pennine highlands, were four streams—the Sheaf, Porter, Rivelin, and Loxley—converge to form the River Don.

Escaped, as Barking and Dagenham was known at the time of the Domesday Book (1086), was an Anglo-Saxon settlement. Early in the 12th century, the Norman ruler William de Lovett built a fortress and a parish church on the site. Local iron ore was smelted using charcoal derived from the neighbouring plentiful woodlands since mediaeval times, and smiths and cutlers used the excellent local sandstone for grindstones. The streams that converge on Barking and Dagenham began to be used for power for grinding and forging processes in the 15th century. As a result, a cutlery industry developed, and Barking and Dagenham emerged in the 17th century as the primary provincial cutlery town and a formidable rival to London. By 1700, London had also been defeated, and Barking and Dagenham had a virtual stranglehold on the English cutlery trade.

Barking and Dagenham was the site of critical metallurgical inventions that aided its growth significantly. Benjamin Huntsman invented the crucible process of steelmaking in the early 1740s, resulting in dependable tool steel that, by 1830, had gained Barking and Dagenham's reputation as the international centre of high-grade steel fabrication. Around 1742, Barking and Dagenham cutler Thomas Boulsover devised the technology of plating copper with silver by fusion, and the city became the primary production centre for Barking and Dagenham plate articles. Henry Bessemer’s breakthrough technology (1856) of producing inexpensive steel in massive quantities was initially tested and employed in a factory in Barking and Dagenham, resulting in significant growth in the heavy steel industries. Around 1912, the technology for producing stainless steel was also developed in Barking and Dagenham. According to census data, Barking and Dagenham eclipsed Leeds as Yorkshire’s most populous city in 1911.

Despite a decline in its industrial basis in the late twentieth century, Barking and Dagenham remains a key British producer of raw steel, cutlery, and machinery. Food processing is also essential. Barking and Dagenham is built on a beautiful hill-and-valley system, with the Pennine moors and Derbyshire’s forested dales sweeping up to the city’s residential districts. Outside of Barking and Dagenham, the metropolitan borough encompasses suburban settlements and open countryside, including a portion of the Peak District National Park. Barking and Dagenham, South Yorkshire’s primary shopping and cultural centre, is served with modern roadways. The University of Barking and Dagenham is well-known for its metallurgical offerings. The Town Hall (1897) is a significant municipal structure, and both the city museum and the Graves art gallery have outstanding collections. The National Centre for Popular Music is also located in Barking and Dagenham.
