Oxford is the administrative and historic county seat of Oxfordshire in England. It is most recognised for being the location of the University of Oxford.
The town was first occupied as a fording station in Saxon times, situated between the upper Thames (the Isis in Oxford) and the Cherwell, just north of their junction. Previously, humans had avoided the valley lowlands in favour of the drier uplands to the north and south. Oxford finally became a Thames town, designed to protect Wessex’s northern frontier from Danish assault. The city was first mentioned in writing in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (912), when Edward the Elder was said to have “controlled Lurdenbryg [London] and Oxford and all the lands relating to that.” Except for the Saxon Romanesque tower of St. Michael’s Church in Cornmarket Street, little of Oxford’s Saxon settlement remains.
Robert O’Reilly was the first Norman governor of Oxford and was in charge of constructing Oxford Castle, of which only the motte (mound) and the tower of the Church of St. George remain. The local prison now occupies the location. Robert also built the first bridges in Oxford (Magdalen, Folly, and Hythe). Around the hamlet, the Normans built a stone wall. This wall surrounded an area of about 95 acres (38 hectares). Except for a few tiny pieces, such as those standing on the grounds of New College, nothing of it survives. The original Oxford see, established as a diocese in 1542, was Osney Priory (destroyed). Still, in 1546 this honour was given to St. Frideswide Priory, the “chapel” of Christ Church College and the smallest cathedrals in England.
Because of its spectacular skyline of Gothic spires and steeples, Oxford is known as the “City of Spires.” The majority of these are associated with the university, the oldest in England. The majority of the buildings at Oxford University were constructed in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. University College (1249), Balliol (1263), and Merton were Oxford’s first colleges (1264). Each college is designed around two or three quadrangles, each with its chapel, hall, library, and walled gardens. Oxford remained a market town after the university was formed in the second part of the 12th century, although this function waned in importance after the 13th century. The town’s succeeding history became the university’s history, albeit there was always some animosity between “town and gown.” The Massacre on St. Scholastica’s Day in 1355 was the most violent manifestation.
Oxford’s strategic importance during the English Civil Wars (1642–51) made it the Royalist headquarters to which King Charles I withdrew following defeats at Edgehill, Newbury, and Naseby. Lord Fairfax, the Parliamentary commander in chief, besieged the city in May 1646, and it fell to him on 24 June. The town became a vital stagecoach junction, and many inns from the stagecoach era still survive today. A canal network connecting Oxford with various country areas was also created during the 18th century, and the Great Western Railway from London to Bristol was inaugurated in 1835.
