Southampton is a city and English Channel port in the ancient county of Hampshire in southern England. It is located on a peninsula between the estuaries of the Rivers Test and Itchen, near the head of Southampton Water.
Clausentum, a Roman colony, was established on the east bank of the Itchen around 43 CE, and inscribed stones, coins, pottery, and other items were discovered there. Before 1086, Southampton (Hamtun, Southampton) replaced the Saxon Hamtun as a royal borough. King Henry II granted the first town charter, most likely in 1154–55, but the borough was not constituted until 1445. In 1447, Henry VI established Southampton as a separate county. Charles, I was awarded a charter in 1640 that stayed in effect until 1835.
Southampton became one of England’s principal ports during the Middle Ages, selling wool and hides from the hinterland and importing wine from the Bordeaux region of France. It was the primary link between the Norman and Plantagenet kings’ kingdoms in France across the Channel. St. Michael’s Church (11th century and later); King John’s Palace (12th century), one of England’s oldest domestic buildings; and parts of the city walls, built of Caen limestone from Normandy and featuring the guildhall over the archway of Bargate, the north gate, are remnants of the city’s mediaeval prosperity.
The port and city declined in the 17th and 18th centuries but were revitalised in the 19th with the arrival of railways, particularly the line connecting London and Southampton in 1840. The port’s historic sectors are shipbuilding and repair, grain milling, and tobacco processing. After suffering considerable damage during WWII, the city centre was reconstructed. And, in 1951, a massive oil-tanker dock and refinery were built on the western side. North Sea oil has arrived to Southampton since 1978, helping it to grow into the country’s second-largest port. Newer industries include: Aerospace, car manufacturing, industrial cable production, electrical engineering products, and petrochemicals
In the late twentieth century, substantial new central-city commercial and industrial developments were built. The University of Southampton (1862) is located in the city’s northern outskirts and there are many other higher and further education institutions in the city. The population of Southampton and surriding area was recorded as 304,400 in the 2011 census.
