What can you teach me about Cambridge?

Cambridge is an administrative and historic county of Cambridgeshire, England, and home of the world-renowned University of Cambridge. The city is located immediately south of the Fens country (a flat alluvial region only slightly above sea level). Cambridge itself is only 20 to 80 feet (6 to 24 metres) above sea level. The majority of the city is located on the east bank of the River Cam, an Ouse tributary. Suburbs stretch over the river, while current growth to the west has focused chiefly on university expansion.

Cambridge, once a fording point, has earthworks, such as Castle Hill and Roman ruins, and Market Hill later became the site of another hamlet. The Barnwell Priory and a Benedictine nunnery, founded in the 11th and 12th centuries, were superseded in 1496 by Jesus College.

Cambridge obtained its first charter in 1207, and the city has had public offices continuously since the Middle Ages. Corpus Christi College was formed by guilds in 1352, giving it a fascinating guild history.

Modern Cambridge has been described as “probably England’s sole truly university town.” Almost all the remarkable architectural aspects are in university and college buildings. Many commons and other open areas enhance the city’s beauty, including Jesus Green and Midsummer Common, Sheep’s Green, Lammas Land, Christ’s Pieces, Parker’s Piece, and the University Botanic Gardens (much enlarged, extended, and upgraded), and the Backs. The Backs are the landscaped lawns and gardens through which the River Cam winds behind the main line of colleges, including Queens, King’s, Clare, Trinity, St. John’s, and Magdalene. There are a series of magnificent bridges, the most well-known of which are the Bridge of Sighs (St. John’s, 1827–31), the Clare stone bridge with thick stone balls on the parapets (1638–40), and the so-called “Mathematical Bridge"". East of the River Cam is King’s Parade, a street lined with lovely shops and the 15th-century church Great St. Mary’s, built between 1722 and 1730 from designs by James Gibbs. King’s College Chapel (1446–1515), Cambridge’s most well-known structure, was designed by Henry VI as part of a vast and never entirely realised vision. The chapel’s remarkable features include massive buttresses, soaring spires and turrets, a high vaulted roof, heraldic devices, and spectacular stained-glass windows.

St. Benet’s Church, with its Saxon tower, the rebuilt Norman Holy Sepulchre Church (one of only four circular churches in England), and St. Edward’s Church are among the city’s other notable churches. The Fitzwilliam Museum (1837–41) stands on Trumpington Street, parallel to King’s Parade. The redbrick University Library (1931–34) is located west of the river. The Cambridge and County Folk Museum is located on Castle Street, near Magdalene College.

Cambridge has extensive train and road connections to London, roughly 60 miles (95 kilometres) south. The River Cam was heavily used for water transport throughout the mediaeval period. The local wharfing facilities (which have gradually gone) were in high demand during the annual Stourbridge Fair. The Cam is popular for recreational boating, punting, and canoeing today.
