What can you teach me about Brighton?
Bristol lies roughly 120 miles (190 kilometres) west of London, near the junction of the rivers Avon and Frome, in the southwest of England. Bristol became a unitary authority after the county of Avon was disbanded, before then - the county of Bristol (1373–1974); the county of Avon (1974–96), and the historic centre of Bristol and the sections of the city north of the River Avon (Lower, or Bristol, Avon) were part of the historic county of Gloucestershire, while the areas south of the Avon were part of the historic county of Somerset.
The river Avon runs west of the city into the estuary of the River Severn, which empties into the Bristol Channel of the Atlantic Ocean about 8 miles to the northwest. Bristol is a historic seaport and business centre. It has a population of 428,234 (2011).
Bristol was founded as a mediaeval town in 1155. In 1247, the harbour was enhanced by diverting the Frome to the west and constructing a stone bridge at its old confluence with the Avon. Bristol imported raw wool from Ireland and manufactured woollen cloth, which it sold to Spain and Portugal in exchange for sherry and port wine during the time of Edward III (1327–77). By the 16th century, Bristol had grown into a major port, manufacturing town, and distribution hub. The city has had an essential role in nautical history since John Cabot sailed from its harbour in 1497 on his trip to North America. The city incorporated the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1552; its hall and several other historic structures were devastated by German bombing during World War II. During the English Civil Wars, Bristol was a Royalist bastion until Parliamentarians seized it in 1645.
Bristol thrived as a processing centre for sugar and tobacco imported from Britain’s colonies in the Americas, to whom it supplied textiles, ceramics, glass, and other manufactured commodities in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The import of Jamaican sugar and cacao from West Africa resulted in the establishment of Bristol’s “sugar houses” and the production of chocolate. However, by the nineteenth century, the expansion of the Lancashire cotton industry and the shipping restrictions imposed by the Avon Gorge below Clifton resulted in the loss of much of Bristol’s trade to Liverpool.
The Avon and Frome tidal waters were channelled in 1809 to form a floating, or tideless, harbour with a constant water depth. With his technique of constructing raised-stone surfaces (macadamizing), engineer John Loudon McAdam upgraded Bristol’s roads (about 1815), and the Bristol roads became a model for road improvements throughout Great Britain. Bristol was the departure point for Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Great Western, the second steamship to cross the Atlantic, in 1838. The arrival of the railway in 1841, followed by dock extensions at Avonmouth and Portishead, resulted in a rebirth of Bristol’s trade and a suspension bridge across the Avon Gorge, built by Brunel and finished in 1864, stimulated even more growth in the area.
