What can you teach me about Cardiff?

Cardiff, or Caerdydd, in Welsh is the capital of Wales and it's largest city. Cardiff exists as both a city and a county, it is located on the Bristol Channel near the mouth of the River Taff in the historic county of Glamorgan (Morgannwg), some 150 miles (240 km) west of London. The origins of its name are unknown; however, it is usually assumed to be an English version of the old Welsh title Caer-Taff (Fort on the Taff).

In the first century CE, the Romans built a tiny fort where the Gloucester-Carmarthen route crossed the Taff, changing it numerous times before constructing the current stone-enclosed fortress. In the 11th century the Normans arrived and since then there has been a permanent settlement. As early as 1081, the Norman landowner Robert FitzHamon constructed a stronghold inside the remains of the Roman fort. For the next 450 years, Cardiff Castle became the seat of the lords of Glamorgan, who governed the county for the English crown. By 1150, a stone shell keep (a masonry substitute for the wooden barrier that crowned the motte) had been completed atop the mound, it is one of the best surviving examples in the while of Wales. Outside the castle, a small walled town was built up, benefiting from the commercial rights of being a staple port, which was given through a series of charters granted by either the local lord or the crown (e.g., 1608, from James I/VI). Cardiff served as both the market and minor port for the local coastal plain. Richard III, Henry VII, and eventually Henry VIII, who never visited Cardiff and abolished the post in 1536, had their hands on the castle and lordship. However, in 1550, Edward VI created a new title, lord of Cardiff and keeper of Cardiff Castle, and awarded it to the Herbert family of South Wales, and through marriage it passed to the earl (marquess since 1796) of Bute in 1776. The Bute family had a significant impact on Cardiff’s later development. They refurbished the turreted castle as a house, with impressive fake mediaeval towers and spires erected by architect William Burges in the late 19th century, and sold neighbouring land to develop a Civic Centre in the early 20th century. Cardiff Castle and its surrounding parks were donated to the city of Cardiff in 1947.

In the second part of the 18th century, the development of coal and iron ore mines around Merthyr Tydfil to the north fueled Cardiff’s growth. The Glamorganshire Canal was established between Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff in 1794, and the first dock was built at the canal’s Cardiff end in 1798. Cardiff had a population of 1,870 in 1801 but grew fast and steadily over the next 100 years as a coal exporter from South Wales, with a population of 164,000 by 1901. The basin and port at Cardiff were built by John, 2nd marquess of Bute (1793–1848) and opened in 1839.
