What can you teach me about Coventry?

Coventry is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands and the historic county of Warwickshire in England.

Coventry is most likely Saxon in origin. The devastation of the Saxon nunnery of St. Osburga by the Danes in 1016 resulted in the establishment of a monastery in 1043 by Earl Leofric of Mercia and his wife, Godiva (Godgifu); Lady Godiva is well remembered for her famous riding through town unclothed on a white horse. The monastery brought trade and wealth. By the mid-15th century, Coventry had established itself as an important centre of the woollen textile industry, particularly for thread and other crafts.

Silk ribbon weaving became the mainstay business in the 18th century, and later, watchmaking was introduced. In 1860, the silk ribbon trade failed, and many weavers left town. However, the beginning of bicycle manufacturing in 1868 resulted in new wealth. As expert technicians, workers in the dying watch business were quickly in demand, and the bicycle industry morphed into the motorcycle and, eventually, vehicle production, with the first Daimler car constructed in 1896. Rayon manufacturing and later radio electronics and artillery operations were introduced in the twentieth century.

Coventry suffered greatly during World War II. The airstrikes of November 1940 and April 1941 destroyed much of the city, except for the spires of St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Grey Friars’ Church, and damaged 50,479 dwellings. At the end of the war, the reconstruction of the town centre focused on segregating people from vehicle traffic, and an inner ring road surrounded the new city centre. The new St. Michael’s Cathedral, built by Sir Basil Spence and dedicated in 1962, is the most well-known of Coventry’s new structures. The old cathedral spire and wrecked nave were left beside the new system.

The thriving postwar industrial industry drew many workers to the city, and large housing estates were erected. Today, the automobile, engineering, and machine-tool industries are the most major employment, with contemporary textiles and telecommunications playing a role. The city is an educational hub, having two long-standing secondary schools and higher education institutions. The University of Warwick was established in 1965, while Coventry University was established in 1970. Thirty-eight square miles of land (99 square km). Population (2001): 300,848; (2011): 316,960.
