What can you teach me about Glasgow?
Glasgow, Glaschu in Gaelic, is a city in west-central Scotland. It is located 20 miles (32 kilometres) from the mouth of the River Clyde on the western, or Atlantic, shore. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, and it has its council area that is wholly inside the historic county of Lanarkshire.
The city encompasses a large portion of the lower Clyde valley, and its suburbs stretch into neighbouring regions. Most major commercial and administrative structures are located north of Clyde. The council area covers 68 square miles (177 square km). The population was counted as 957,620 in the 2001 UK census.
Glaschu, Glasgow’s Gaelic name, means “Green Glen.” There is evidence of a fortified prehistoric village on the site, but Glasgow did not emerge until around 550 CE when St. Kentigern (Mungo) arrived and established a religious community. On the chapel's location, the current cathedral, dedicated to St. Mungo and commenced in the 12th century, was built. Around 1180, William I made Glasgow a barony burgh, and in 1189, it was granted the privilege to organise an annual fair. In 1350, the first stone bridge across the Clyde was completed. Glasgow became a royal burgh in 1450, and Glasgow university was established in 1451. Glasgow thrived as a market town because it was centrally located between Highland and Lowland Scotland and between Edinburgh (the capital, 45 miles (72 kilometres) east) and the west. However, Glasgow did not grow significantly until after the union of the Scottish and English kingdoms (1603).
Glasgow was already exporting coal, plaid (wool cloth), and herring to Europe when trade with the Americas began in the 18th century. Trade-in tropical products from the Americas (tobacco, sugar, and rum) made fortunes for Glasgow merchants as the Clyde was dredged and deepened, finally making it accessible to the city’s heart.
With the Industrial Revolution came coal mining, iron founding, chemical production, and, most notably, shipbuilding, which flourished in Glasgow in the early nineteenth century. The success of Glasgow’s shipbuilding and heavy industry was severely harmed after World War I, and its economy has subsequently diversified.
Glasgow’s population and congestion were reduced due to industrial decline and the establishment of the periphery new towns of East Kilbride and Cumbernauld. High-rise rehabilitation initiatives replaced Glasgow’s renowned slum tenement districts in the mid-twentieth century (particularly the Gorbals). Glasgow underwent a new wave of redevelopment and construction in the late twentieth century.
