About Me
I currently live and work at an independent boarding school in Perthshire with my wife and 3 young boys.
I have been a teacher of History, Modern Studies and Politics for 10 years as well as an examiner for relevant exam boards for several years.
Prior to changing career to work in education I spent 10 years working in Government and Politics. Firstly, as a Research Assistant to a backbench MP, then an Office Manager for a frontbench opposition MP, private office to a Minister and Secretary of State in DfE and then as a Political Advisor to a large Group of Councillors and a directly elected Mayor.
I have developed a lot of experience working in pastoral care as a boys Housemaster and use these skills to provide a personalised focus during tutoring which is centered on the individual needs of the pupil.
Tutor Experience
I have taught A-Level Politics for most of my 10 years in schools as well as GCSE and A-Level History.
I also teach SQA Highers in History and Modern Studies and lead on the delivery of Politics and Modern Studies in my Department. I currently tutor 4 pupils to a highly bespoke and individual level that pinpoints their areas of improvement and focuses support to maximise mark potential.
I have marked for AQA, Edexcel and OCR exam boards. Most recently I focus on exam marking for A-Level Edexcel and tend to mark paper 3a and paper 1 although I do teach, and have always taught, papers 1, 2 and 3a.
I blend a lighthearted approach with a relentless focus on assessment and examination performance. I maintain that revision and exam preparation is always best led on a personalised a deeply bespoke level. No one revision programme will ever look the same. I use methods with students to develop their confidence and independence in designing their best approach to their own revision.
I use a strong knowledge foundation to support academic writing in a style that ensures pupils will maximise chances of scoring marks at assessment level.
Our sessions will focus on assessment skills and objectives as well as providing study skills to pupils and concurrent activity to maximise development.
Each pupil has access to their own virtual workspace. I will share self-assessment grids initially and this will help me to plan and personalise content delivery around their weakest areas. This approach helps to maximise pupil outcomes most effectively.
Topic Expertise
Highly experienced in the delivery of edexcel papers 1, 2 and 3a. Further, I teach all core ideologies and have taught feminism, nationalism and anarchism under non-core ideologies.
I have an extremely deep understanding of edexcel board requirements to succeed in the Politics A-Level and use real examples to demonstrate routes to success. Pupils I have tutored consistently have secured at least 2 grades above their mock results.
In History I particularly enjoy teaching Nazi Germany, the Cold War and have taught a range of subjects across OCR and Edexcel A-Levels. I have experience in teaching iGCSE History. I can also help support coursework development and give some additional feedback and am happy to provide bespoke costing arrangements around this.
