About Me

I was born in London, where I lived until 2010, when I moved to Barcelona. I first worked for a number of years teaching ESL as well as examining for Cambridge (First, Advanced and Proficiency). That is how I discovered my passion for education and in 2016 I moved back to London to gain my PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status. I worked as an English Language and Literature teacher in an outstanding secondary school in East London, where I gained experience teaching GCSE English and Media Studies. Since 2019 I have taught MYP and IB Diploma English Language and Literature in Barcelona. Last year I started examining for IB Diploma, for Paper 2 and for Higher Level Essay. I am passionate about all things related to literature, art, music and education.

Tutor Experience

-IB Examiner for English A: Language and Literature (Higher Level Essay and Paper 2)

-August 2019 to present date: Head of English and Teacher of English, St Peter’s School, Barcelona
Responsible for the coordination of the English department, including Language and Literature and Language Acquisition curriculum planning. Teaching of: IB Diploma English A: Language and Literature and Theory of Knowledge; and MYP Language and Literature (MYP Years 1, 2 and 5).

Pedagogy: After having first ensured that students have the necessary knowledge, my lessons and activities are differentiated according to ability and involve student-centred exploration of themes and texts with an emphasis on peer learning. I ensure that students have a clear idea of the assessment requirements, which enables learners to reflect on their own and others' development. Wherever possible I implement creative activities which allow students to demonstrate understanding, analysis and evaluation of texts. Exploration of texts is based heavily on the establishing of a clear meaning and/or message, which then allows students to carry out insightful and meaningful analysis. Consequently, I am particularly confident in helping a variety of students make personal connections with texts, which are always chosen carefully so as to reflect relevant world issues. This appreciation of texts in turn means that students are able to produce high quality creative work.

Client Reviews

very good teacher highly recommend it. the feedback he gives is very specific which makes it way easier for you to improve. if you are not getting detailed feedback on each paragraph you write you won't improve. he tells you exactly what the issue is and how you improve it. on top of that, he tells you what you are doing well and what you can do better at. To be honest I was a student struggling with English, especially IB paper 2, but Alhamdulillah i'm no longer struggling, through the help of Mr. Martyn. i can't emphasize how much he really helps just try it out for yourself. Generally, English lessons tend to be boring, but with Mr. Martyn, it wasn't boring at all. he does a fantastic job of making you engage in the lesson and breaks down big ideas like creating meaning in texts into smaller ideas making it easier to understand, follow and most importantly implement in your responses going forward. he also just focuses on the exam paper so he gives you the right information you need.
