About Me

As well as a passion for history and for education and learning, I love travel and languages, having lived in Spain, France, Sweden and Denmark, and love writing, recording and performing music.

Tutor Experience

I have over 5 years experience achieving top GCSE and A-Level history results teaching at a challenging inner London school. During this time I have honed my online tutoring, using various platforms, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Prior to teaching history full-time, I taught English as a foreign language both online and face to face since beginning in 2009. Much of this was while based in Spain and I am fluent in several languages; English, Spanish, Catalan, French, Swedish and Danish.
I also worked as a historical tour guide bringing to life stories from the history of the incredible cities I was lucky enough to work in; London, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Copenhagen & Ghent. I like to bring in this international cultural perspective to lessons, making them fun by bringing in music, movie, food, and other cultural references to enrich my students' understanding of topics.

Testimonials

Mr Dear has been my teacher for five years now, taking me through my GCSEs and A Levels, and I can’t recommend him more for either. He made GCSE content memorable and easy to learn, and the initially daunting scope of A level content digestible, with useful advice for and feedback on every essay. He was always willing to go the extra mile to give help where it’s needed and dedicates an enormous amount of time to us. He make learning not only easier but genuinely engaging and interesting, and it is no surprise that a majority of our GCSE class went on to pick history for A Level, with some including myself now going on to study it in University, which Mr Dear has definitely played a key role in - Michael Smith, 18.

Mr Dear's teaching has been extremely effective for my work at history A-Level. He shows a huge level of dedication to lessons and shows a genuine interest in the subject that is necessary for allowing lessons to remain relevant and engaging. His tasks are refined to specific needs and he targets weaknesses to allow for the best results. Without his teaching I highly doubt I’d feel as prepared and knowledgeable about history as he has encouraged me to immerse myself within the subject and given me the support I need to get the best grades - Anna Colenso, 18

Mr. Dear has taught me history since year 9 (Weimar & Nazi Germany, Medicine Through Time, Superpower relations & The Cold War, India's road to independence & Protest, agitation and parliamentary reform in Britain). Throughout this five-year journey, I have become more confident in answering essay, source, and interpretation-based exam questions. He has supported me with many quizzes and acronyms to help make my learning considerably more accessible and understandable and has always pushed me to work my hardest. He has effectively explained to me the mark scheme and how to perfect my essays, always providing me with more information surrounding my subject topics and providing access to additional information like articles, books, and documentaries to support my learning of the topics - Ange Konan, 18.
