I am an English teacher, currently living in Vietnam and working at a British International School where my two sons attend. I am from Kent in the UK and enjoy writing, hot spring baths and funk rock.
From 2005 I taught English in Saitama, Japan for almost 10 years, mostly working in a private secondary school for girls (Otsuma Ranzan Junior and Senior School).
Following that posting, I returned to the UK in 2014 and worked within the UK state school system, teaching in Maidstone, Kent at a grammar school (Invicta Grammar School) for 2 years, and then at a comprehensive school for 3 years (St. Augustine Academy).
In 2020 I returned to international teaching and moved to Dubai in the UAE and taught English (MYP and DP) in an IB international school (Uptown International School) for 2 years. I also began to teach the Theory of Knowledge at this school.
Since 2022 I have been teaching English at the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Here, I teach KS3, IGCSEs in English Language and English Literature, and the IB DP (English A Language and Literature at Standard Level). I have also continued to teach the Theory of Knowledge (IB DP).
I believe in modeling the style of writing students aspire to develop, breaking down techniques to show exactly how they can refine and improve their work. When teaching literature, I guide students to analyze themes and characterization, ensuring they can clearly articulate their understanding. Expanding relevant vocabulary and making meaningful connections between key events and characters are integral to our discussions. As a qualified SENCO, I am experienced in supporting students with special educational needs, particularly those requiring additional literacy support. I tailor my approach to help every student build confidence and achieve success.
I have taught a great range of texts over the last 20 years, including most of the texts that are commonly studied for IGCSE, A Level and IB DP examinations. These include, Macbeth, the Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Taste of Honey, An Inspector Calls, Of Mice and Men, 1984, A Raisin in the Sun, a huge number of poems and many many more.
I consider myself experienced and successful in developing students' skills in literary analysis.
