Thomas is currently an academic researcher in Music Composition at the University of Sheffield, specialising in vocal music, where he also teaches composition at undergraduate level. He started his musical journey learning the piano and violin in school before turning to composition at undergraduate study, where his passion for singing and choral music flourished. He then went on to study Vocal Composition under internationally recognised composer Paul Mealor.
Thomas has sung in many choirs throughout the UK, including at prestigious festivals and abroad. As a composer, he has received various premieres of his music, most recently at the 2023 Leeds Lieder Festival.

It has been a great pleasure for the Consort to get to know Thomas’s motet Regina Caeli Laetare, a text that has been set to music by composers over many centuries, including those who lived during the period of the core repertoire that the Orlandos have studied over its full working life. The piece is written very well indeed for the line-up of voices within the group (Alto, 2 Tenors, and Baritone) and the presentation is of the highest order, allowing the singers to gauge the composer’s wishes instantly in respect to tempi and dynamics.

The reason I started working with Thomas is that I was looking for an experienced tutor/coach who I could look up at both, as a musician and as a person. We are not only maintaining my vocal capabilities, but stretching my range, gaining more confidence, and expanding my musical knowledge (with music theory and history included). Thomas creates a friendly and supportive atmosphere, where I’m not worried of making mistakes or failing while practicing. He provides an emotionally secure environment without being judged, which is essential to me for learning and development. Thomas explains the music, how I can interpret, and feel it as my own, to be able to perform at the highest standards. Stepping out of the comfort zone, while learning new pieces is a joyful discovery with Thomas, where I learn not the actual piece only, but more about music and myself as well.

I always end a class feeling so musically rejuvenated! What Tom has as a teacher of music, can not be bought. Simply put, it’s priceless! Tom patiently guides you through the nuances. He so patient, there are no judgements here I normally sing gospel, soul, blues, jazz and more recently BV’s in a rock band. Classical music is something I’ve always wanted to try. It’s been wonderful a wonderful and smooth introduction working with Tom in this genre.
Tom is a diamond! Thank you so much!

Just in a time period of 4 weeks, I already see myself benefiting from the great techniques and tips that Tom very kindly recommended best suited to my voice. Tom is a great teacher with a wealth of musical knowledge, the right attitude and the ability to maximise singing potential by understanding individual needs of each singer as his student. Tom's gentle and patient manner facilitates a safe environment where you naturally grow as a singer. He has made me feel valued as a singer and I am eternally grateful for his kind support.
