About Me
Hi there, thank you for viewing my profile! My name is John, I am 27 years old and a graduate of Lancaster University with a degree in Mathematics with a minor in Physics. I am now tutoring as my full time job. I have over 7 years tutoring experience and have had fantastic results and feedback. I am very passionate and enthusiastic about Maths, Physics, Astronomy and Chemistry, teaching and helping others.
My results speak for themselves. The average improvement of my students last year was 2.8 grades! Out of a total of 20 students with exams (including this years mocks). In 2024 one of my students won the Pearson award for the highest grade internationally in Astronomy. For students I have worked with for over a year, over 50% achieve a grade 7 or above. Over 95% achieve grade 6 and above.
My teaching style is based on relational learning. I teach my students how to understand maths rather than just answer the questions. I focus on a deep understanding so the knowledge will be based in their long term memory rather than their short term memory.
I write my own bespoke worksheets and exams.
For home schooled students booking lessons before 3pm I give 10% off.
I have devised my own KS3 to GCSE curriculum for home schooled students that has seen resounding success.
In my free time I like to play bowls, tennis, golf, chess and board games!
Tutor Experience
Teaching experience - I run my own small business specialising in teaching Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Astronomy to small groups of home schooled students. Parents have said they see a passion and enthusiasm for learning in their children after attending my lessons. I also make sure to focus on exam technique when the time is right, I create individual revision plans and exam strategies for each student in order to maximise what I call their 'marks per minute' in exams.
I have seen exceptional results from all my students, over 50% achieve a grade 7 or above, over 95% acheive a grade 6 and above. You will almost never see such statistics from schools, I belive my small group, relational teaching methods, tailored homework strategies and passion for my subjects lead to these impressive statistics. I am always willing to go the extra mile to help my students.
Tutoring experience - I tutor many school students and home schooled students privately on a 1:1 basis. For students who have been with me at least 6 months, they improve at least 1-2 grades on average. Sometimes more. My proudest moment was a student I took on in the October of her exam year, she was doing foundation Maths and really struggling, acheiving a grade 2 in her October mock, I saw great potential in her, and worked with the school to move her up to higher Maths and she came out with a grade 7. With more time I'm sure I could have got her a grade 9. This is one example of many of the great levels of improvement my students see!
Topic Expertise
For GCSE - The main part of my experience is in teaching the Edexcel IGCSE and GCSE specifications for Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Astronomy. But I also have experience teaching CIE IGCSE, Edexcel, AQA and OCR GCSE triple science and double science. Tutoring as my main profession has allowed me to gain experience across all the subjects I tutor and multiple exam boards.
For A-level Maths - My experience is roughly evenly spread between Edexcel, AQA and OCR exam boards. For A-level further Maths I specialise in the Edexcel specification and question style.
