I am an experienced English Literature and English Language teacher, having spent years teaching in various educational environments, online and in-person.
I have 14 top-grade GCSEs, 4 strong A Levels, a first-class degree from Cambridge, a Master's, a PhD, a PGCE, and a long history of publication: book (Travel Writing and the Transnational Author, 2014), journal articles (Journal of Postcolonial Writing, Journal of Commonwealth Literature, and more), reviews, and edited collections.
I started my teaching career in a Further Education college, where I taught GCSE and A Level English and coordinated the ‘Aim Higher’ programme — supporting students applying to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. Later, at a private school, I led the Academic Enrichment programme, supporting Oxbridge applicants in everything from personal statements to interviews.
And here I am today: offering English tutoring and Oxbridge admissions support to students from all backgrounds.
In my spare time, I enjoy music (I've sung in choirs professionally for many years), reading, watching sport, and spending quality time with my wife and three energetic young sons.
What:
* English at all levels.
Where:
* 1-to-1 tutoring of undergraduate English students, University of Leeds, on essay structure and subject knowledge (2010--15)
* lecturing and teaching undergraduates at Newcastle University and the University of Lincoln (2012--13)
* cover supervision of all ages at state secondary schools in Barnsley and Leeds (2014)
* teaching GCSE English in a Further Education College (2015--17)
* teaching A Level English Literature and English Language in a Sixth Form College (2017--21)
* teaching English Language and Literature to Years 7 to 13 in a private school (2021--25)
Why:
* all English teaching and tutoring designed to help the progression of all students, at whatever level
* my mission is to share subject knowledge while helping others
How:
* my pedagogical approach is student-centred, question-based, and Socratic; I favour an interactive classroom, wherein every student is allowed to progress to her/his utmost potential.
I have expertise in postcolonial study (as explored in my postgraduate study, and publication of a book [Travel Writing and the Transnational Author, 2014] and numerous academic journal articles [in the Journal of Postcolonial Writing, Journal of Commonwealth Literature, and more]). I am thus expertly positioned to provide A Level and undergraduate students with tuition in this area.
In terms of exam boards covered, I have a great deal of experience (10+ years) teaching AQA (Literature 'B' A Level, Language and Literature GCSEs) and have also spent the past 2 years teaching IGCSE Language and 4 years teaching IGCSE Literature -- on which course I was an examiner for some years before my full-time employment at a Further Education College in 2015.
