I have over 15 years’ experience providing multi-disciplinary statistical guidance using a range of statistical software packages such as SPSS, Excel, SAS, Jamovi. I am passionate about making statistics and quantitative research accessible to all, tailoring every session to fit the needs and level of the student. My dedication to improving learning experiences is demonstrated through my extensive educational research history with a particular focus on my PhD topic of reducing maths and statistics anxiety. I incorporate methods to reduce this anxiety in my teaching, helping students reach their potential.
I have been working in UK universities since 2007, teaching statistics/research methods to a range of disciplines and levels from Foundation courses to PhD candidates. On every module I have taught, I have redeveloped material to improve engagement, understanding and learning outcomes. Currently I provide individual online tuition/support at Coventry University and deliver statistics courses for the Royal Statistical Society alongside working on my PhD.
My primary lecturing role at Sheffield Hallam University was teaching all the core statistics content on the BSc Mathematics degree. I overhauled the modules to focus on developing the knowledge and skills required in research or data analyst roles including working directly with employers on a wide variety of projects.
Other teaching
Research methods for sports science, foundation maths and statistics, bespoke dissertation workshops for departments such as business, journalism, art therapy, sports, biomedical science.
My primary role for the last 15 years is coordinating and providing statistics support at Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield. I have helped 1000's of students choose and use the most appropriate statistical techniques to answer their research questions or understand course material to maximise their grades. I have been recognised as a leader in my field, provide training for other statistics tutors, developed a wealth of resources in a variety of packages and received three awards during this period.
With BSc and MSc statistics qualifications and a working with a range of disciplines, I can teach any level from study design, data management/cleaning and summary stats to advanced methods.
I can use a range of statistical software packages but have the most experience with SPSS, Jamovi, JASP, Excel and SAS programming.

Ellen is incredibly patient and her experience and expertise in data analysis and all things stats related are phenomenal. Ellen enabled me to feel more confident with implementing stats knowledge into my masters research. I had no prior experience of stats and Ellen took her time to explain concepts to me that took my results chapter to the next level. It was fortunate that my results were statistically significant with a large effect size but it was Ellen who helped me understand how to explain the significance of these results within my research field. I would highly recommend Ellen as a stats advisor.
Amazing tutor! Feedback (from lecturers) on my submitted MSc dissertation implied that I needed to improve the quality and accuracy of the findings. I used this feedback and reached out to Ellen Marshall, who has spared a lot of her own time to provide invaluable mathematics and statistics support. My amended dissertation is much much better, and feedback (from a Professor) suggests that I have some really interesting work worthy of publishing.
Thank you so much Ellen, I am much more confident with writing stats reports as well as using jamovi and excel. I am going to use this newfound confidence to hopefully turn my dissertation into a journal article.
I have the pleasure of working with Ellen as my statistics tutor, and I cannot recommend her highly enough. Ellen is incredibly patient and dedicated, affording me the time I needed to get to grips with complex statistical concepts. Her explanations are always clear and thorough, and she always ensures I understood each topic before moving on.
Ellen also helped me see and arrange data in ways that were easily understandable, which significantly enhanced my ability to interpret and analyse my research findings. Her support has been invaluable, and I am truly grateful for her assistance.
If you are looking for a knowledgeable and supportive statistics tutor, Ellen is the perfect choice.
