Hello! My name is Angelos Sofocleous and I have a PhD in Philosophy from the University of York. I also have an MA in Philosophy and a BA in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Durham. My PhD research was focused on the phenomenology of depression experiences. In particular, I researched how interpersonal relationships are disrupted in experiences of depression by analysing first-person accounts of depression. I specialise in the fields of phenomenology, existentialism, and philosophy of mind. Further, my areas of interest include ancient Greek philosophy, ethics, and epistemology.
I have worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of York and at the University of Leeds, teaching the following courses: Reason & Argument, Ethics, Ancient Philosophy, Early Modern Philosophy, Knowledge & Perception, and The Mind. I am currently a Tutor in Philosophy for the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of York for which I have developed and taught the following courses: Introduction to Philosophy, Existentialism and the Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, Stoicism, Ancient Greek Philosophy, and Current Issues in Philosophy.
For my contribution to teaching, I have received the University of York Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award.
I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
In my free time, I enjoy poetry and photography!
I have a PhD in Philosophy from the University of York and 5+ years of experience in teaching, tutoring, and marking.

In addition, in 2023, I taught a series of seminars at the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science of the University of Leeds, at the module The Mind.
Besides teaching, my duties and responsibilities as a Graduate Teaching Assistant included providing thorough feedback and detailed comments on students' work.
Since 2021, I have been a Tutor in Philosophy for the Centre for Lifelong Learning of the University of York, for which I developed and taught the following courses: Introduction to Philosophy, Existentialism and the Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, and Stoicism. I am currently developing the courses Current Issues in Philosophy and Ancient Greek Philosophy which I will be teaching at the Centre from April 2024 to June 2024.
I also have extensive experience teaching Philosophy, Psychology, and Religious Studies at the online teaching platform MyTutor, for which I have been tutoring since 2019, on GCSE, A-Level, and University levels.
In our lessons, I aim to make you as passionate about philosophy as I am! Encouraging intellectual curiosity, promoting independent thinking, and cultivating a love for philosophical inquiry are central to my teaching philosophy. By instilling these values, I aim to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel. I regularly assess student progress through a variety of means, including class participation, quizzes, and essays, providing constructive feedback to guide their development. I look forward to working with you!

Good presentation and useful discussion.
Good, clear discussion in areas of interest.
The explanation of how I can improve my TOK essay was very details, moreover, the feedback was specific and sufficient. Also, the explanations of the philosophical background and ideas that I can include in my essay was very helpful and allowed me to improve the quality of my work.
Really helpful!
Excellent and detailed feedback was provided.
"Fantastic tutor, Angelos, is kind, respectful, quick to respond, incredibly knowledgeable of his subjects and very insightful in explaining all of his comments and reasons for them. I enjoyed learning with him and look forward to more lessons in the future." (Scott - MyTutor)
"My tutoring sessions with Angelos have been really helpful; lots of the content I hadn’t learnt before and he did a fantastic job of explaining it thoroughly and providing examples to help me remember arguments. We managed to cover a lot of content in a short space of time, so I’m really grateful for all the help he’s given me. Thanks Angelos!" (Natasha - MyTutor)
"Angelos went above and beyond to help me with an ethics module I was finding difficult at university. His subject knowledge is fantastic and I found his lessons to be very helpful and clear. Would definitely recommend!" (Jacob - MyTutor)
"If you're looking for someone with real knowledge in the subject, this is your man. Angelos is not only a very knowledgeable individual in his field, but also quick to respond and trustworthy. He delivers what he promises with clear explanations, examples and arguments. I definitely recommend him!" (Kum - MyTutor)
"I really liked Angelos. He's kind, friendly, understanding, and very good at explaining the material and breaking the dialogues down into manageable pieces. The seminars were great for developing understanding. Without the seminars with Angelos explaining, I would've felt quite stranded." (Ancient Philosophy)
"Didn't quite feel like I ever understood anything until the seminars and worksheet but from there it was really helpful. Tutor really helped my understanding and make me feel more confident about doing it myself." (Reason & Argument)
"Angelos has been a really great tutor, and never assumes a basic level of knowledge about the topic which means the seminar environments are not competitive, but egalitarian and helpful. this module has been really enjoyable."(Ethics)
"I have never studied philosophy before or knew much about it but Angelos made it really interesting and I would probably take another course in it. I even bought a book about a philosopher!" (Introduction to Philosophy)
"Teacher was so knowledgeable and also very flexible as was able to adapt to level of students." (Existentialism and the Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre)
"I found this course a real pleasure- one of the best I have attended ! Not only was the content extremely interesting but the interaction with the tutor was helpful and informative and the group discussion was very good. I think Angelos is a very good teacher with an excellent ability to encourage participants to feel happy to comment or raise queries. Thoroughly enjoyable." (Stoicism)
