About Me

I am a former primary school teacher and Head of Science who loves teaching, but has left the classroom in order to spend more time with my own family. I am brand new to Spires so don't have any teaching hours logged on here yet, but I am also an experienced tutor.

Before training as a teacher, I spent a lot of time working with children in out of school and holiday clubs. This was when I discovered the joy in helping children build their confidence and succeed at things they didn't realise they were capable of. Building on this joy led me into the classroom, where I could share my enthusiasm every day with my class.

My own education focused primarily on science as this is a subject I have always enjoyed. Natural Sciences allowed me to keep studying a broad range for as long as possible, before finally specialising in zoology. During my teacher training, I undertook a module in English Specialist Teaching in order to ensure I would be as rounded a teacher as possible.

I have three teenage children, two of whom are currently in the middle of their GCSEs and A-Levels, and I am definitely not bitter that they are all now better at football and netball than I am!

Tutor Experience

To me, teaching is not just learning a series of facts. It is important to build a student's 'soft-skills' such as confidence, perseverance and independent thinking in order to allow them to apply the facts they learn. My many years working with children has taught me the importance of understanding each child as an individual in order to motivate them and build their self belief. I have used this lesson with every child I have taught since, both in 1:1 tutoring and within the classroom, and aim to tailor learning in a way that best suits each individual.

Students naturally compare themselves to their peers, and unfortunately the exam system tends to encourage this. I like to encourage the student to compare themselves now to what they used to be capable of - only comparing themselves to their past-selves and their future goals.

I have been a primary school teacher working in Key Stage 2 for ten years (including plenty of experience with online teaching during covid isolations). During this time I have taught children age 7-11 in every subject, including in small group and 1:1 situations. These smaller group sessions have primarily been in maths, comprehension or grammar and have been both for children that have been struggling and for more able children needing a nudge to get to the next level. My subject expertise have also seen me appointed Head of Maths and of Science during my time at two different schools.

I have tutored maths and science at GCSE level locally for two years, with an average improvement of one grade above predictions.
