I graduated from Oxford in 2019 with a first in English and French, and in 2023 I completed an MPhil in English at St John's College, Cambridge. My academic specialism is in modern and contemporary poetry, but my research often spans philosophy and art history. I am half-Portuguese and grew up in Australia. I am a very warm and friendly tutor who is skilled at building up students’ confidence, allowing them to explore their interests while also focusing on concrete strategies for boosting grades. As well as tutoring, I work as a freelance writer, translator and editor in film and publishing. I also write essays, poetry and fiction, and have held fellowships at the University of Melbourne and Varuna Writers’ House.
I have been tutoring for more than 7 years, working with every age group from preschool to adult learners. I’ve worked in secondary schools as well as freelance tutoring independently and through agencies. Since the pandemic I have also had a lot of experience devising online lessons that are engaging and effective. I mainly tutor French and English, as well as mentoring students in the process of applying for university. I have supported students with successful applications to Oxford, Cambridge, and various other UK and European universities. On the French and English side, I am familiar with a range of exam board specifications, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Cambridge iGCSE, and IB. I have helped countless students to improve their essay structure and writing, textual analysis, and language skills, and boost their final grades. Many students come to me because they dislike or struggle with essay subjects, or because English is their second language, and I am able to offer targeted strategies for acing exams, at the same time as alleviating fear of essays and helping students find real enjoyment in the work. Where appropriate, I lead students beyond the syllabus, allowing them to expand on their own interests and critical thinking skills, which greatly helps in the lead-up to university.
At primary school level I have tutored English (focusing variously on reading comprehension, analysis skills, and creative writing) as well as French (for children who had begun to study it in school, and for some who had not). I have also worked with students in the later years of primary to help them prepare for the transition to secondary school. This includes international students preparing to move to an English-speaking school for the first time.
For GCSE, I can cover all core humanities subjects, but specialise in English Language, English Literature, and French. I am familiar with all major exam boards, including Edexcel, AQA, OCR and iGCSE. At A-Level, I most commonly tutor English and French, as well as Extended Essays and, for the IB, Theory of Knowledge.
I work with undergraduate and postgraduate students on research, essay planning and academic writing. I have also supported successful university applications in a wide range of subjects, including English, Modern Languages, History, History of Art, Philosophy and Theology.
