I was educated at University of Oxford (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) and the University of Nottingham (MA with distinction and PhD in Politics/IR/History).
I was a university lecturer for 20 years, working at various UK institutions. I taught politics, foreign/security policy, international relations, public policy, essay skills, qualitative research methods and discourse analysis.
I published many books and articles across my research interests, including textbooks on International Relations Theory and UK Politics. In 2020 I was awarded the Best Article prize by the European International Studies Association for my journal article on Global Britain.
I was also a media pundit, did policy advice and helped write political speeches. I was external examiner at a number of UK institutions, helping improve degree programmes as well as supervising individual postgraduate students to doctoral level.
I held research fellowships in Political Science at University of California, Berkeley (2010) and in Public Policy at the University of Cambridge (2019-2020).
A former postgraduate and undergraduate admissions officer, I also help students with personal statements in support of university degree applications. Students I've worked with have received offers to study on some of the most competitive programmes in the UK.
I have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2002 (membership number 12130).
I am a member of The Tutors' Association (membership number 69613591) and I fully abide by its Code of Practice (see https://thetutorsassociation.wildapricot.org/code).

knowledgeable and interesting... this will be a fun journey
Oliver immediately understands my assignments and provides very good material to approach the question. Very good!!
Straightforward and insightful. Thank you, Oliver. 😊
Every class with Oliver has been an enormous pleasure. He is an incredibly dedicated professional who constantly pushes for the student's success, providing recommendations that enhance the quality and clarity of essays. I could not have been luckier in choosing Oliver Daddow. I worked with Oliver for 6 months, meeting weekly to prepare for my MPhil applications. We shared 40 classes, totaling more than 34 hours. I can sincerely say that my experience has been unparalleled. I could never have achieved as much as I did without Oliver's help. The quality of my essays and personal statements improved exponentially after our multiple sessions.
Oliver possesses four key skills that make him an exceptional tutor. First, he has an immense sense of clarity in writing. As a Spanish speaker, I know I face challenges in effectively transmitting messages in written English. Oliver was adept at identifying my mistakes and refining my writing to convey the intended message more sharply, directly, and simply.
Secondly, Oliver has an outstanding sense of framing. Even though I knew much of what I wanted to convey in my personal statements, Oliver always found the best ways to present the information for maximum impact and order. He knows how to engage the reader’s interest.
Thirdly, as a long-time admissions officer, Oliver understands what UK universities are looking for. He comprehends the process and offers tips and tricks that I believe no other tutor can provide.
Last but not least, Oliver is a great person. Graduate application processes are highly stressful, especially for an international student like myself, who has had minimal contact with the British educational system. I have had many instances where I needed a calming response from someone more knowledgeable, and that person was always Oliver. He was even kind enough to answer during weekends and accommodate my hectic work schedule.
Without a doubt, Oliver is the best tutor to choose. He combines high skill, insider knowledge, and empathy.
Best history tutor!!
Very happy with Oliver's guidance and support thus far ! He helps put my mind at ease and makes the full task feel less daunting :)
Fantastic. Oliver is an insightful tutor who knows absolutely what needs correcting and how to improve your work. Even if it's long-form. I highly recommend Oliver to anybody in need of a great tutor
"Has been very helpful in helping me understand my course's content and explaining both assessment requirements while also assisting in how to present/structure my arguments very well" - James (January 2023).
"Oliver helped me from beginning to end and ultimately tutored me towards receiving the highest grade I have gotten so far in graduate school! He was respectful and thoughtful and helped think about the right topic, pare it down, and gave a few rounds of feedback that helped transform the paper from a good paper to an excellent paper! Highly recommend!" - Mollie (April 2023)
"Oliver was a fantastic help to me while writing my dissertation. He really helped me organise a daunting project into manageable pieces, and was able to answer questions small and large. He is very flexible in terms of scheduling sessions and makes time to help whenever he can. On top of that, his incredible bank of knowledge makes me confident that he could likely help anyone with any topic or project. He also makes the effort to gain more knowledge about your specific project to make him all the more knowledgeable. Finally, he is very kind, patient and sincere. His gentle and comic demeanour actually makes tutoring sessions fun and productive. I’m very lucky and glad that I got in touch with Oliver and would recommend him to anyone needing a tutor." - Alexa (April 2023)
"Oliver is a fantastic tutor. He is someone who is not only incredibly patient and understanding, but kind and thoughtful. He’s not like your normal lecturer or seminar tutor, he actually pays attention to your writing and wants the best for YOU. Having come to him with an empty slate for a dissertation, he guided me and aided me in the whole process, from start to finish. Whether that was giving excellent literature pointers or providing feedback to the highest standard, he was brilliant throughout and I couldn’t recommend him enough.'' - Theo (September 2023)
“Oliver's tutoring was a great help during my Masters degree. His suggestions about planning and drafting my work were useful for the dissertation, as well as for writing several essays on topics such as research methods, politics and economics. For my dissertation, the discussions with Oliver and his feedback helped me develop my thinking, and he recommended useful sources to read. He gave great advice on research methodology, on structuring the dissertation, on what content was relevant and whether my writing was clear and logical, as well as about academic conventions and style. With his help, I got a distinction for the dissertation and for the course overall.”
– William (September 2024)
"I highly recommend Oliver as a tutor. Oliver creates a learning atmosphere that is both collaborative and empowering. Rather than imposing his own ideas, he fosters a supportive environment where you're encouraged to develop and refine your own, ensuring a true sense of ownership over your work. One of the things that sets him apart is his ability to help you break down your project or assignment into manageable steps and create a realistic timeline. This approach not only eases the pressure of deadlines but also helps significantly with procrastination. With his extensive experience in the field of politics and a wealth of knowledge to share, Oliver is an incredible resource and mentor." - Katharina (September 2024)
"Oliver is the best tutor I’ve ever had! His attention to detail and teaching style adjusts perfectly based on his student. During my final year at University, he has been immensely useful with essay writing tips and planning. His knowledge and experience is invaluable when it came to my Politics degree. He will help you achieve your desired grades. He was very aware and compassionate about my circumstances and was very kind to adjust lessons to my convenience. I definitely recommend Oliver as a tutor. " - Achintya (May 2024)
"You've been a massive help, the best tutor I have experienced on the website so far. I will 100% come back with any more essays that align with your profile" - Molly (January 2023).
