Experienced university lecturer and tutor in History of Art, English Literature, and History. I am passionate about helping students realise their full potential; in finding innovative ways to make ideas accessible; and believe strongly in one-to-one mentoring as the best way to educate, to nurture passion for a subject and independence of thought.

I have spent over a decade teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels at the Universities of Cambridge (where I gained my BA, MPhil and PhD) and York, while tutoring school-age pupils on a casual basis.
My own research is in medieval cultural, literary, and art history and I have written a book and published widely in this area. But I am fascinated by and have accumulated teaching experience in almost all periods of the history of art, literature, and religion, from ancient times to the present day.
I am a mother to two young children, which requires patience, empathy, and humour that I bring to all my classes and tutoring relationships. In my spare time, I love to read (of course!), sew clothes, and sing and play guitar.
At the University of Cambridge, I have taught undergraduate level History of Art (ancient to modern), and carried out postgraduate/dissertation assessments, and admissions interviews.
At the University of York, I have taught undergraduate English literature (specialising in medieval literature).
I have privately tutored A-Level English Literature, History, and History of Art.
See my full list of Tutoring Subjects for these and other areas I can offer tuition in.
Most of my experience is in undergraduate and A-Level teaching, of History of Art and English Literature. I am also highly experienced in helping undergraduates with academic writing, and supervising independent research projects (from A-Level dissertations to PhDs) in these areas. Another particular area of expertise for which students often want special guidance, is literary and visual analysis skills, and preparation for source-based exam papers.
I have taught students mainly taking exams with AQA, Edexcel, and OCR but can quickly adjust my sessions to any exam board criteria, and the same goes of specialist papers and courses. I am a versatile teacher and having worked for so long in university departments, am used to covering a large syllabus.
I am a really approachable teacher with a familiar style. My main concern is you and your enjoyment of the content - in my experience, you don't learn much if you're not having fun at the same time. So I'll try my utmost to make sessions not just instructive but entertaining (....within reason!).
