I am new to Spires but have a 28 year school UK and international school teaching career behind me and now dedicate myself full time to tutoring students from around the world. I am an IB physics examiner and have coached many students to successful outcomes in elite university entry. Twenty eight years of teaching science and physics have given me an in-depth understanding of the best ways to encourage students with diverse learning styles to learn and ask questions in the right way. I have a detailed knowledge of many examination systems including GCSE, IGCSE, A level and the IB Diploma and use this knowledge to help my students with exam preparation and practice. I am based in the UK and amongst other things, keep honey bees in my garden.
I taught for 28 years in schools, 18 of which were in the UK in both the state and private sectors. I taught secondary science, GCSE & IGCSE science, physics and chemistry and A level physics over a variety of exam boards. I also spent 10 years teaching internationally in Turkey, Sudan and China in a variety of programmes but predominantly in the IB MYP science & DP physics programmes. I have been tutoring students one-on-one and in groups for the last 10 years, mainly in China but more latterly here in the UK; I very much enjoy being able to give students the individual attention they need to accelerate their learning. I have an EAL qualification and have an interest in the way language development can be applied in a science lesson context. I very much see myself as an English teacher as well as a science and physics teacher; it is great to see students whose first language is not English successfully negotiate the difficult, technical vocabulary needed for success in science. I make my lessons engaging by using a variety of activities including the use of simulated experiments and video but I also encourage my students to be interactive and to contribute. I encourage my students to ask questions – in an inquiry-based learning environment, it is the questions that are asked rather than the answers that are often the most important.
