Having achieved a 1st Class BA in Economics (with Hons.) from Durham University, including a Year Abroad studying at McMaster University, Canada, I made the decision to broaden my knowledge base and went on to achieve a Distinction in my MA in Theatre Directing at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.
Sharing my knowledge, whilst sparking interest and passion for these subjects led me to become a tutor. The ability to provide students with an individual, personalised education service is incredibly rewarding for both parties. Moreover, it helps to build confidence for any student in their abilities, and most importantly, achieve their full potential.
As a director, much of my role is to get the best out of individuals, both by inspiring them, setting an example and spotting where their talents and interests lie. The most effective way of doing so is by creating a friendly, unpressured environment, which serves efficient use of time and allows individuals to create their best work.
My interests also include chess (having captained the Welsh junior team at 12), sailing, theatre, literature and film, whilst always leading an active lifestyle by running marathons. Having taught Scuba Diving to children aged 13-16, a sport which requires huge trust between pupil and teacher, I am also well equipped to deal with high-pressured and stressful situations. Often complimented on my calmness and approachability, I have worked with children of all ages in both practical and educational environments.
I've been working as a private tutor since 2017, having amassed over 300 hours of experience including over 100 hours online. I've worked with the top London agencies, private clients and schools to deliver a personalised tuition service tailored to the student's individual needs and requirements.
My students have all seen rapid improvements in their assessments due to their better understanding of the core topics, alongside clear and structured examination technique. I keep up-to-date on the latest changes to each exam board's spec and continually update my content and resources.
My experience using online platforms ensure that the online tuition provided is even more efficient, integrated and engaging than any in-person tuition for Economics A Level, 13+, 11+, Home-schooling and Drama lessons. Schools include St. Paul's, King's, Putney High, Wellington, Sevenoaks and Stowe.

“To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to recommend Hamish Clayton for his excellence as a tutor and as a mentor and a leader. Hamish brings patience and perceptiveness to his teaching in each and every lesson that he conducts with our son, Jack Thomson. Apart from his academic ability, which is obvious from his educational record, Hamish is a highly motivated tutor who inspires students to greater effort and application.
One indication of Hamish’s impact is the lingering positive effect on our son, whose attitude to his Economics has patently improved, as have his results. Hamish is a person of principle who is punctual, polite and thoughtful in his approach and has a clear sense of responsibility that is itself a lesson for his students.
I unreservedly recommend Hamish as a tutor and would be happy to answer questions about his work with our family.
Yours Sincerely,
Robert”

Typically my students are either aiming for A/A* grades for entry to the top UK/US universities and are currently underperforming. I begin by looking over the core content topics with each student and an informal assessment so I know their current level. We’ll then make a realistic plan for our sessions that is tailored to that individual allowing for flexibility and focus on certain topics and examination techniques. An example plan is as follows:
Sessions 1-3: Covering all Microeconomics content via informal assessments, lessons and resources. Focus on any areas of difficulty.
Session 4: A summary of the Microeconomic content via a past paper question. An introduction to examination technique and structure.
Sessions 5-7: Covering all Macroeconomics content via informal assessments, lessons and resources. Focus on any areas of difficulty.
Session 8: A summary of the Macroeconomic content via a past paper question. A continuation on examination technique and structure.
Sessions 9-10: A detailed analysis of mark-schemes, examination content and necessary structure for top grades.
Sessions 11-12: Putting together content and technique in timed past papers.
13+: I have much experience with students working towards ISEB 13+ examinations and cover each subject (except Latin, Spanish, German). Again, I firstly ask if any subjects in particular are in need of attention.
In Maths, Geography, Biology, Chemistry and Physics we’ll focus on the key content of the syllabus - focusing only on the knowledge necessary for the examinations. We’ll then introduce past papers so that we can begin to apply this knowledge onto questions and practice timed environments.
In English, History and RS we’ll look hard at essay structure and writing techniques to give students the structure they crave for these more subjective areas. By planning essays and compositions together, before allowing the student to write them up in full will help practice the skills necessary to achieve their full potential in the timed papers.

“Hamish taught a variety of subjects to our 12 year old in preparation for 13+. Hamish was incredibly methodical and also created a schedule that suited the abilities of our son. This worked particularly well as our son needed help with not only learning but organising himself to learn on his own. I was incredibly impressed with the way Hamish coached our son and also used very positive language even at the end of his tutorage when the pressure was on in terms of revision and exams were looming.
I would definitely employ Hamish again in the future to help out with revision and an extra lessons in the build up to GCSE's and would strongly recommend him to you and any potential parents if their children need any academic support in term time, revision and exam support.
Kind regards, Naomi”

“Hamish is an exceptional young man - an intellectual and academic with an underlying drive and passion for theatre. Whilst he has studied Economics at university he has always sought or created opportunities to explore and pursue his innate talent in the performance arts.
Whatever the task he showed commitment, a generous and supportive attitude, a keenness to experiment and ferocious attention to detail. He has a very sharp mind and is highly articulate.
I have no hesitation in recommending Hamish, he would be an asset, rise to any challenge and thrive in any environment.”
