Student’s (and parent’s) most Frequently Asked Questions

Why study Film?

Film Studies is unique in the way it blends thinking critically and imaginatively, which makes for a unique skill set that can be applied across many fields in life.

If you're considering an academic career, film studies could provide both theoretical insights into the film as an art form - through scriptwriting to postproduction - and practical insights into succeeding academically. And if your interests lean more towards criticism or academia outside of academia (teaching, journalism) then this could be the perfect degree for you.

People often think about academia as restrictive to creativity; however, by engaging reflexively with texts, ideas, and disciplines - all while receiving expert-level teaching support from your peers and professors alike - you'll learn how to think critically and rationally

There are many reasons to take film at IB. Firstly, it is academically rigorous with an engaging curriculum that teaches you how to understand the cultural, political, and ethical implications of film. It also prepares students with strong analytical skills, which will always be valuable in any field of work. Importantly the film industry is booming, albeit on the small screen and mobile devices, and other liberal arts degrees may offer more restrictive career options.

What master's degrees is Film useful for?

You might consider yourself interested in film studies. But, after completing your undergraduate or bachelor's in film, you must ask yourself what aspect of it interests you the most.

If you consider yourself to be a creative writer, your skills might be of great use in the productions and scriptwriting department. As such, you can get a master's in television fiction writing and go on to write your own blockbuster original drama or comedy.

You can also consider the highly interesting masters in moving image and sound in which you can learn different techniques such as CGI and stop motion animation film production or moving image creation using sound effects or music. There will also be opportunities for you to learn scripting and narrative skills as well pre-production techniques including writing scripts that engage audiences!

It is folly to think that film studies is purely a field of application. In fact, there is much room for research and academia within the department of film studies. Consider looking into research degrees such as an MPhil or PhD in Film Studies, where you will learn to critique and understand the intricacies of the impact of films on culture and other aspects that any common viewer could never pick out.

Alternatively, if you want to become the next big filmmaker yourself, you can go for a masters in Directing and Producing Science and Natural History. This would enable you to work for the most high-profile documentary makers around the planet.

What careers can studying Film lead to?

A hundred years ago films used to be only accessible to a certain elite. Then they become available to the masses in cinemas. And today, as we hold our cell phones and tablets in our hands, the cinemas are inside our homes. Films are a very powerful tool to impact society, which is why they require much deliberation and thought while making:

Here are some careers for those who major in Film Studies:

How does Film help with Visual effects?

Studying filmmaking helps in the development of many skills that are necessary for a career in visual effects. If you can create compelling worlds that people want to exist, then your skill set is golden. Anything else like character design, storyboarding, object modelling and texturing falls into place with these skills. Being able to see yourself as an indispensable member of any production team is always helpful because knowing how much one person does contributes to the success of it all will go a long way in figuring out what you need to do next with your skill set.

Having a background in filmmaking is a good way to build up capabilities and skills that can be applied to visual effects. It also has the advantage of making it easy for transferrable skills - any skill learned in one industry or field can be used in another industry or field with little trouble - and this cross-referencing of art social experiences is an invaluable boon when applying for jobs.

At the "early" stages (directing, editing, score), those needed for visual effects provide significant knowledge and experience that prepares them well as they move into more specialized careers inside of computer animation. For example, many often create 3D models as part of their studies which helps prepare them to design virtual sets later on down the road.

Does it matter if the tutor is near me?

No, it doesn’t! It’s all done online whenever and wherever you are. All you have to do is pick your ideal mentor and speak to them to arrange the best time for you to have video lessons. It doesn’t matter at all if they are miles and miles (or kilometre and kilometre) away from you!

Who will my tutor be?

This is all up to you. You have a huge choice. You can look through our member tutor profiles, check student reviews and bids, their qualifications and backgrounds, hourly rates, hours taught, other subject they teach - and even check out if they have many repeat students.

Then, communicate with your favourites to see if they are right for your needs and learning style. You can have a free video call by webcam, usually over zoom. Then you pick the person you’d like to help with your studies and schedule your first webcam lesson!
