Ancient and Modern History - Oxford University

I have been teaching and tutoring for five years now and have acquired a wide range of teaching experiences and skills. I began when I was still at school by tutoring a GCSE history student whilst I was doing my A-Levels. I also volunteered at an after-school homework club. I would tutor the children on an individual basis, helping them with their homework and keeping track of their progress. I also began to take up classroom teaching jobs, going to Kenya in partnership with the charity Hand-in-Hand to teach English, History and Politics to 14-17 year old students at Mogonjet School.

At university I continued to pursue teaching opportunities teaching at the Keio Summer School for Japanese university students each summer of my undergraduate degree, in which I taught history, debating and drama. I have also continued to pursue teaching opportunities abroad, completing the six week i-Learner internship in Hong Kong in the summer of 2018, in which I taught 12 to 18 year old’s a wide range of topics. In the summer of 2019 I did the Educamp internship in Beijing. I taught at three ten-day camps at Camford Royal School, teaching history, creative writing and sports. I also helped to tutor my Camford home room students for the "My Dream" speech competition in which students competed for a multi-thousand pound scholarship to the school by giving a speech in English about their life goals. The students that I tutored came first and second place.

I have also continued as an individual tutor. During the spring of 2019 I worked for CamExpress, an online tutoring company based in Shanghai. I taught online lessons and created online lectures for 16-18 year-old students who were considering applying to Oxbridge for university, as well as giving advice about the Oxford application process.

Ross's last completed A Level Ancient History job with Ida: Occasional - Hello,
I am looking for an ancient history tutor to help me prepare for my A-level exam which I will hopefully be taking in 2021. The things I am struggling with the most, are questions related to character analasis, the consequences of significant events, breakdowns of relationships and breakdowns of both dyplomatic and military strategies.
I would be looking to have a lessons twice a month and I am flexible with my timetable.
Thanks,
Ida

Ancient History - University of Birmingham

I qualified from the University of Sussex in 2018 with a Distinction in Classics teacher training. During that year I taught at a secondary school and a sixth form college, teaching GSCE Latin and Classics, A level Classics, and running group revision/ review sessions for the students.

I have taught abroad in Namibia (2013 - 2014), and in China (Summer of 2016). During my time in China I was teaching at an English summer camp and I received my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language).

Currently I am a full time PhD Ancient History researcher. I also work part time as a supply teacher for the local schools.

For the last couple of years I have done online tutoring on a range of websites, mainly introduction to Latin or Latin grammar revision, as well as a focus on helping students improve their essay writing techniques

Hebe's last completed A Level Ancient History job with Richard: Occasional - Hello Hebe
My 17 year old daughter, Isabella, was self studying to take OCR AS Ancient History this summer and then the A level in 2021. She is currently distance learning History, Classical Civ. and Law A levels. She is very keen to study Ancient History/Classics at university.
I studied Classics over 30 years ago and have been helping Izzy but am looking for someone to set and mark essays so she can prepare for the A level. The plan would be to see how it goes for a month and if all goes well, then to continue for the next academic year.
Best wishes
Richard

History of Technology - University of Oxford

I've worked successfully as a tutor for GCSE and A-Level students for a number of years now, helping them drastically improve their grades. I've also done considerable work as a university supervisor and mentor for undergraduate, master's, and first-year doctoral students at the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and other institutions. My approach is mainly trust based, my students are often amazed by just how much they can do for themselves if they're in a learning environment that isn't adversarial, oppressive, or plain dull. Beyond A-Level, I also have teaching experience at the University of Oxford as a tutor and seminar leader for undergraduate history and sociology students, and I have degrees in both Archaeology and History. My background of experience is technological, and I work as a civilian consultant to the NASA Ames Human Factors laboratory in that capacity. Central to my approach is an understanding that my students are people, with their own unique strengths, weaknesses, and abilities, which need to be nurtured and supported in order to get the best possible results.

In this way, learning can, and should be of a reciprocal exchange of ideas, and by embracing this in a more relaxed and curiosity-driven approach, it becomes far easier for many to explore, absorb, and abstract their understanding of both the surface learning of school qualifications, and the deep learning of the concepts behind them crucial to getting the very highest grades.

Classics (1st) - University of Oxford

Over the past two years I have tutored students regularly in Latin, Ancient Greek, Classics, English Literature and Essay writing. I am familiar with the OCR syllabuses for Latin, Greek and Classics both at GCSE and A-level, and have developed my own resources designed to tackle set texts, unseen passages, translation from English into Latin/Greek and to reach the required level of grammatical understanding. I have also tutored a pupil for Latin IB, including the research dossier. During university, I took up Latin and Ancient Greek from scratch, so I can vividly understand the frustrations and difficulties which arise when learning Ancient languages. This has made me explore alternative methods of learning vocabulary and improving grammar through texts, rather than tables.

I have tutored pupils who need to gain top grades to take up their Oxbridge offers, and pupils struggling at school in need of extra support. As such, I develop my resources and teaching methods depending on the individual needs, aims and interests of the students. I am able to provide exam-style passages, vocabulary tests and writing tasks if desired.

During my final year of University, I volunteered in a local primary school on a programme called 'Literacy through Latin', teaching latin to a group of year six pupils, particularly those eligible for pupil premium. The project aims to use Latin to improve literacy, and so I developed latin games, exercises and creative projects. For this project I received training from the Kings College London education department.

In addition to these regular students, I have tutored pupils for competition essays, including those for the St John's College Oxford prize and the Mary Renault Prize, encouraging high-achieving pupils to think creatively and write fluently. I also have experience tutoring a mature graduate Psychology student in essay writing skills, helping them to improve their writing style ahead of a final dissertation.

Archaeology - Durham University

I pride myself in the quality of working relationship quickly developed with students of all ages. Whether reaching for examination confidence, mastery of subject content or skills, or progress with emotional, behavioural or cognitive needs, all tutees should expect teaching that is entirely personalised and constantly adaptive to their evolving learning, including:

- guidance for pupils toward understanding and pride in all supported subject disciplines, while troubleshooting all associated challenges, from frustrations with phonics to maths anxiety, from the art of the essay to that of examination-timing and from Alternative Vote in politics to ‘alternative conceptualisations’ in chemistry;

- mentoring or life-skill teaching: identifying and fostering scholastic and general skills beyond those specific to particular academic subjects yet required for flourishing within educationally related outcomes generally;

- support for atypical educational needs. Teaching in this area is important to me, and I am currently extending my training with additional part-time postgraduate studies. Inwardly, special-needs are never what I see; what I see are special opportunities: exciting opportunities. My teaching teaches for exciting futures, not needful ones.

My aim is for each of my students to discover the tools, skills and conviction to achieve all the outcomes of their and of their parents’ hopes. I want my students to discover what they can do and to inspire themselves by what they find.

Classics - Oxford

My teaching combines exceptional subject knowledge with a broad range of experience, which enables pupils of all abilities to achieve the best results they are capable of. I have successfully encouraged a huge range of pupils to take Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation on to A Level, and to pursue the study of Classics at University, and at Oxbridge in particular. I have a wealth of experience in preparing students for public examinations in all areas of the Classical curriculum, however I also place great emphasis on their development beyond the syllabus, by developing critical thinking skills, independence of mind, the ability to debate, and the confidence needed to conduct their own research for the EPQ

Ancient History - University of Oxford

I've loved Classics since I was 10, when I wanted to become an actor or the world's greatest Classicist. I can't claim to be the world's greatest, but it was a dream to go to Oxford University and study for a Master's degree.

During my studies, I tutored undergraduate students in Latin, whilst also tutoring GCSE students in London. I have also worked with 4-18 year-olds in Hong Kong teaching history, English and Latin. Since joining Spires, I have tutored students in Philosophy, Religious Education, Latin, and Academic Writing, achieving five star ratings across the board. I also have plenty of experience tutoring online with other organisations, and have an excellent record of bumping up grades at GCSE, A Level and Degree level studies.

I am incredibly patient, clear, friendly and enthusiastic. I have a wealth of knowledge about the Ancient World, a thousand interesting stories, and most importantly, I love to teach.
