I've worked successfully as a tutor for GCSE and A-Level students for a number of years now, helping them drastically improve their grades. I've also done considerable work as a university supervisor and mentor for undergraduate, master's, and first-year doctoral students at the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and other institutions. My approach is mainly trust based, my students are often amazed by just how much they can do for themselves if they're in a learning environment that isn't adversarial, oppressive, or plain dull. Beyond A-Level, I also have teaching experience at the University of Oxford as a tutor and seminar leader for undergraduate history and sociology students, and I have degrees in both Archaeology and History. My background of experience is technological, and I work as a civilian consultant to the NASA Ames Human Factors laboratory in that capacity. Central to my approach is an understanding that my students are people, with their own unique strengths, weaknesses, and abilities, which need to be nurtured and supported in order to get the best possible results.
In this way, learning can, and should be of a reciprocal exchange of ideas, and by embracing this in a more relaxed and curiosity-driven approach, it becomes far easier for many to explore, absorb, and abstract their understanding of both the surface learning of school qualifications, and the deep learning of the concepts behind them crucial to getting the very highest grades.
Over the past two years I have tutored students regularly in Latin, Ancient Greek, Classics, English Literature and Essay writing. I am familiar with the OCR syllabuses for Latin, Greek and Classics both at GCSE and A-level, and have developed my own resources designed to tackle set texts, unseen passages, translation from English into Latin/Greek and to reach the required level of grammatical understanding. I have also tutored a pupil for Latin IB, including the research dossier. During university, I took up Latin and Ancient Greek from scratch, so I can vividly understand the frustrations and difficulties which arise when learning Ancient languages. This has made me explore alternative methods of learning vocabulary and improving grammar through texts, rather than tables.
I have tutored pupils who need to gain top grades to take up their Oxbridge offers, and pupils struggling at school in need of extra support. As such, I develop my resources and teaching methods depending on the individual needs, aims and interests of the students. I am able to provide exam-style passages, vocabulary tests and writing tasks if desired.
During my final year of University, I volunteered in a local primary school on a programme called 'Literacy through Latin', teaching latin to a group of year six pupils, particularly those eligible for pupil premium. The project aims to use Latin to improve literacy, and so I developed latin games, exercises and creative projects. For this project I received training from the Kings College London education department.
In addition to these regular students, I have tutored pupils for competition essays, including those for the St John's College Oxford prize and the Mary Renault Prize, encouraging high-achieving pupils to think creatively and write fluently. I also have experience tutoring a mature graduate Psychology student in essay writing skills, helping them to improve their writing style ahead of a final dissertation.
I've loved Classics since I was 10, when I wanted to become an actor or the world's greatest Classicist. I can't claim to be the world's greatest, but it was a dream to go to Oxford University and study for a Master's degree.
During my studies, I tutored undergraduate students in Latin, whilst also tutoring GCSE students in London. I have also worked with 4-18 year-olds in Hong Kong teaching history, English and Latin. I'm a primary maths specialist and have worked with children from ages 4-11 in booster and extension groups. I am experienced at teaching children with gaps in their understanding and a variety of SEN. I use a concrete, pictorial and then abstract approach to building mathematical understanding with a focus on reasoning and problem solving. I am particularly experienced at teaching the KS2 primary maths curriculum but also have experience teaching the KS1 curriculum and early years number and shape, space and measure. As a teacher, I know exactly how to enable my students to pass tests particularly their KS2 SATs, maths GCSEs and 11+ examinations. I was a year 6 teacher for two years and in both years all of my maths set reached the expected level with 30% of children in my sets achieving greater depth. I have also developed an in depth understanding of the reading, writing and SPAG assessments for KS1 and 2 and have prepared whole classes and small groups for these assessments. I have been teaching and tutoring for five years now and have acquired a wide range of teaching experiences and skills. I began when I was still at school by tutoring a GCSE history student whilst I was doing my A-Levels. I also volunteered at an after-school homework club. I would tutor the children on an individual basis, helping them with their homework and keeping track of their progress. I also began to take up classroom teaching jobs, going to Kenya in partnership with the charity Hand-in-Hand to teach English, History and Politics to 14-17 year old students at Mogonjet School.
At university I continued to pursue teaching opportunities teaching at the Keio Summer School for Japanese university students each summer of my undergraduate degree, in which I taught history, debating and drama. I have also continued to pursue teaching opportunities abroad, completing the six week i-Learner internship in Hong Kong in the summer of 2018, in which I taught 12 to 18 year old’s a wide range of topics. In the summer of 2019 I did the Educamp internship in Beijing. I taught at three ten-day camps at Camford Royal School, teaching history, creative writing and sports. I also helped to tutor my Camford home room students for the "My Dream" speech competition in which students competed for a multi-thousand pound scholarship to the school by giving a speech in English about their life goals. The students that I tutored came first and second place.
I have also continued as an individual tutor. During the spring of 2019 I worked for CamExpress, an online tutoring company based in Shanghai. I taught online lessons and created online lectures for 16-18 year-old students who were considering applying to Oxbridge for university, as well as giving advice about the Oxford application process.

Due to my academic achievements, I was selected to become a Teacher's Assistant during my undergraduate degree. For this position I completed a 3-month course in pedagogy. I spent a year tutoring first year undergraduate students in their coursework, helping students with their writing and comprehension by developing techniques to improve textual analysis and idea development.
I developed my expertise in this area tutoring undergraduates and postgraduates in Law and Politics. In addition to helping students improve comprehension and analysis, I help students conduct research. My students have exclusively achieved First Class and Higher Second Class marks in their coursework and dissertations.
APPLICATIONS & INTERVIEWS
I am experienced tutoring university applicants. Whilst studying at the University of Cambridge, I conducted practice interviews for students from underprivileged backgrounds. Working closely with my Dean of Studies (who ultimately selects incoming students) I provided feedback and helped students improve their interview skills.
I applied my knowledge in this area helping students apply to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. I helped students draft personal statements, prepare for the LNAT (national admissions test for law), develop CVs and practice interviews. My students got in to their first or second choice university.
EXAMS & STUDY SKILLS
I have extensive experience helping students prepare for exams. In addition to providing tutorials to improve comprehension of the subject, I teach evidence-based exam techniques like 'spaced-repetition' and 'active-recall' to help students better demonstrate their talents under exam conditions. I have helped students improve their marks by at least one letter grade/level, frequently helping students achieve Firsts.
