I've been tutoring for a very long time, which has given me experience working with all manner of students: at school I was a Higher Education mentor and I tutored reading and essay skills in a Paired Reading Challenge; whilst pursuing my BA, I was coordinator for GCSE English Revision sessions, responsible both for preparing GCSE English classes and training my fellow tutors. I was also the Core Skills lecturer at my university's Summer University programme, where I lectured on essential skills for Higher Education such as essay writing, academic research, and presentation skills. I spent the summer of 2015 teaching English to Italian schoolchildren, aged 11-13, at a fully immersive English summer camp in Veneto. I recently tutored a a pre-university student through her applications to an English Literature undergraduate degree, where I prepared her for transitioning from English as a subject in the French educational system to the demands and expectations of studying Literature at Bachelor's level.
In particular, I trust that what makes me a good tutor is that I am an enthusiastic communicator. I quickly develop effective relationships with my students, and I am very supportive of their academic endeavours. I believe that teachers always have a pastoral responsibility for their students. This means that my students are always eager to learn, as their apprehensions about the subject lessen and their confidence grows.
During my PhD studies I taught a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses pertaining to the broad fields of Government and Politics, including among others, International Relations, Foreign Policy, Politics, Politics and Society in Central and Eastern Europe, Institutions and Policies of the European Union, Emerging Market Economies, European Security, Sociology, and Qualitative Methods. Based on the excellent feedback I have received from students, both inside and outside the university, and their request to help them with other modules I have also taught courses on History (e.g. History of the Soviet Union, Cold War, etc.) and Culture (e.g. Russian Cinema, European Literature, etc.) thus broadening my teaching area expertise.
I have been tutoring Maths and Economics on the side of my studies for the past 7 years now. In addition to these subjects, I have a broad range of experience tutoring History - I got also national prize for my A-Level! I think that writing style is perhaps the most important thing you can develop during the GCSE/A-Level years, and I can help you make sure that you write in a clear, coherent and confident manner. Finally, I'm happy to help with those daunting UCAS applications, Oxbridge interviews, and any other aspect of university applications.
I have worked as a professional tutor and educational consultant for six years. I have taught dozens of students for thousands of hours in total. I have also worked as a teacher in an independent school in North London.
I have had many successful students; a few examples include:
>Two admitted to study HSPS at Cambridge.
>One admitted to all three of Westminster, Winchester, and St.Paul's for 13+.
>One who gained 84/84 marks in his A-Level Politics Paper 2, which is now being used as an exemplar.
>One who gained an A in A-Level History after being predicted a C.
I believe that the most important virtue in a tutor is the ability to empathise with a student's cognitive position. When teaching I aim to guide a student through the mental steps needed to accomplish the goal of the lesson.
I typically spend much of a lesson in dialogue with the student. I break this up with exercises to embed and reinforce key points, but I always end the lesson with a call to reflection on what the student has learned. I emphasise that knowledge is open-ended and interconnected.
I have taught A Level History for twelve years in a sixth form college and I have been tutoring online for two. I am dedicated to helping young people reach their potential and in 2018, my students averaged one grade higher than their predicted A Level grades. I have a great deal of experience in working one-to-one with students and I always aim to make my tutorials enjoyable and supportive, whilst encouraging great progress with both coursework and exam preparation. I have also assisted over a hundred students with their Oxbridge applications, and I work closely with university admission tutors. I am experienced in helping students prepare personal statements and applications, as well as in providing mock interviews and advice on admissions tests.
My secondary education was comprised of the IB Diploma, in which I received the full 3 bonus points and graduated with a commendation. I am familiar with IB Higher Level and Standard Level curricula, but also able to tutor A-Levels and GCSE.
I completed my undergraduate degree in History at King`s College London and graduated with a distinguished First, being awarded the Elizabeth Levett Memorial Prize in History for the highest mark on a BA or MA dissertation. My interests are far-ranging and cover 20th-century world affairs, Tudors, Stewarts, and the early modern period in England, and the medieval world. I wrote two extended theses in this period, both of which received marks over 70.
In 2016 I received a Masters in History from the University of Oxford, with an emphasis on medieval history and textual history including book production and medieval script, and produced a thesis of 25,000 words. I have had papers accepted at multiple conferences around the country and am available for proofreading and editing as well as subject tutoring.
